I love Christmas. And by that I mean that I love bringing a tree into the house and stringing it with lights, buying and receiving gifts, creating and sharing traditional meals with my family, listening to Frank Sinatra sing timeless songs I know by heart, and passing the fire of a lit candle to others while singing Silent Night. And yet…. As a non-Christian, each year I also struggle with this thing called Christmas. Is it a religious holy day that I am misappropriating, or is IT a misappropriation of a sacred day for pagans? Must “Christ” be in Christmas, or can every child be a symbol of the birth of the holy that we celebrate? So much to unpack…. let’s see what I can do this morning in 20 minutes!
