Lectio Divina traces its foundational roots back to the 3rd-century teachings of Origen and the early Desert Fathers of Christianity although many religious traditions practice a form of scriptural reading that invites personal and deep connections with the text.
The version that we will practice has evolved from those early beginnings and will include inspiring prose and poetry as well as some ancient mystical texts. The practice invites us to listen deeply to the words and sense what catches our attention - or as we say, what shimmers. Subsequent readings of the same passage invite a time to savor the words more deeply and then listen for what they may be saying very personally to us about our current lives.
And finally, we rest in silence and allow a deep settling of whatever message we have received.
It is a simple yet profound practice.
