I was so fortunate to count Ed as one of my wonderful friends at Westminster. Physically, he resembled Burl Ives so perfectly that we were never sure if they were one and the same. He was a dapper and extremely funny man who ran our auctions, made our lobster rolls, and served on just about every committee. Ed was married to Fran (who’s also in our garden) for 64 years and they raised 3 delightful sons. He taught geometry at Moses Brown and Wheeler for nearly 35 years where he convinced reluctant students that math could be fun, even if they found it difficult. He loved Westminster and after he retired, he undoubtedly spent more time here than in his home up the street on Love Lane in E. Greenwich. Ed contributed his ideas, enthusiasm and financial resources with the hope that Westminster would thrive long after he settled in among the ivy in our garden.
His work, and the work of so many others both in our garden and interred elsewhere, has made our present congregation’s health and vibrancy possible. It’s humbling to honor Ed’s contributions and to ponder that we all have an important role in sustaining our beloved Westminster and our Unitarian Universalist faith.
