Paying Attention: What Ancient Scriptures Teach Us About the 21st Century

A primary text of the Hindu religion, the Bhagavad Gita was loved by Unitarians Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, among others. It’s wisdom provided them with the foundational philosophy for American Transcendentalism, emphasizing detached action, spiritual introspection, and unity with nature. It taught them to embrace simplicity, seek the divine within, and live with mental tranquility while pursuing self-reliance. These ideas, as well as some of the deeper messages of the Gita and other Hindu text can continue to inspire and instruct us on how to pay attention to what really matters. This morning, let’s look at these teachings and what they can offer our 21st-century lives.
